-January of 2004 started out with Centre term and The Yellow Boat. It was an amazing experience, and made me think that I might want to do props as a job. The show itself was a joy to work on, and the end product was so powerful.
-Also in January, my need for companionship drove me to acquire Fish, my first betta. He's still going strong--moved all the way up to a 10 gallon tank--and he provided many things for me through that spring term of senior year (namely company, and someone to care for--sometimes at my own expense).
-Spring of 2004 was a flurry of busy times in my memory. I recall a lot of pain and sweat. It culminated towards the end, where it all paid off at the conclusion of my senior art exhibition, in which I was informed that I had acquired a job for the next year. The sensation of relief and excitement afterwards was amazing.
-I made the best of my last summer ever. It was an outpouring of pent up creative juices into various forms of art, spending time with good friends, and having Carleton nearby. I made it a point to never be bored, and milked the time for everything I could.
-The fall was the start of the changes. Moving up here, starting my job, having various intimidating grown-up things tossed at me from all around--it was all rather overwhelming. I've learned so much working at Long Wharf, both good and bad. I've acquired all kinds of exciting new skills, and all kinds of unpleasant new knowledge.
-Winter rolls around, and it is time for change. It is strange, I love the things I get to do, I love to be able to create. But at the same time, I am not happy here. To put it bluntly, working in theater sucks balls. It is not worth it. People say that to work in theater you have to "really love it," more and more that's starting to sound like a cop-out, something people say to reassure themselves. I remember hearing about when Laura Beth Adams gave up theater to move to Arizona and teach aerobics, or something like that. Everyone seemed so shocked, and even outraged, but I think I can empathize now.
I don't know what to do now. I took this internship to find out if I really wanted to do this as a job, and the answer is a resounding No. Would quitting be along the lines of abandoning these people or this obligation? Or would it be the right thing to do, the braver thing?
More than this has taught me that being brave is terrifying and painful.

Thanksgiving Thoughts
If anyone remembers the christmas cactus I rescued from the gloom of props storage last year, I'd like to announce that it is blooming like crazy. It's ready to be re-potted, too.
A more general thought: every now and then, I am forced into some situation (being stuck in an airport lobby, for instance) in which McDonalds is the only feasible means of nourishment. I usually buy something, eat it, gag in disgust, and make a dramatic proclamation that I will never, NEVER, eat McDonalds again EVER.
However, deep in my heart, I know the next time I stop at a rest station on a long trip and that's the only food for miles, I'll shrug off my promise to myself and eat again....only to be disgusted again....only to swear I'll never eat it again. What is it about us humans that we constantly and even knowingly make the same mistakes in life, over and over and over again? Happy Thanksgiving!

Graduation
Graduation is over, I am no longer a college student. Actually, I am no longer a student, period. This will take some getting used to (probably won't realize it until the fall when I don't go back to school).
Having Carleton around during the time of pre-graduation chaos was wonderful, and having him around during post-graduation relaxation is even better. I feel very inspired to do the cleaning, unpacking, stuff-purging bit.
So much to do, but now I have so much motivation to do it! It will surely take me a week alone to unpack and clean and get organized, but that won't be without regular resting and visiting breaks (Dave, Ken, and Brendan, prepare thyselves!)
I think the summer will be good.
In other news, D Flo and I are the masters of Taboo (mogui! mogui!)

Cocoanuts
Holy Crap for Crap! The show was abso-frickin-lutely awesome! I was so impressed with everybody. D Flo fell into the Groucho role so well, and Ian as Chico was amazing, considering Chico is one of the brothers I often overlook. Strother, I know you were sad about being the normal one, but you were a fabulous Zeppo. Plus, I got to hug Colin in his Harpo costume, which was very gratifying. I was not disappointed in the slightest.
Everyone else, I am astounded at the awesomeness with which the dance numbers came together. I know you guys put a buttload of work and pain and sweat and tears and the occasional blood sacrifice into this, but it really paid off. I almost peed my pants on several occasions.
So, as the "Who's your favorite Marx Brother" poll wraps up in my last post, it looks like Harpo is in the lead with 6, followed by Groucho with 3, Chico with 1, and Zeppo with a few "I also liked him"s
Thus as the prize, I will draw Wertle dressed up like Harpo, doing something....Harpo-ish. Don't be dismayed if you don't see it until after graduation though ^_^

Day Off
In spite of the mountains of work I have to do, I decided to come home for the weekend, and am very glad I did. I probably would not have gotten any work done at school anyway, most likely would have just moped about. Coming home was instantly refreshing.
This afternoon I joined Dave, Ken, and Brad at the Cherokee Triangle Art Fair, which was similar to the St. James Art fair except more pleasant weather and less people. We actually spent most of the beginning of the afternoon resting on Brad and Evan's porch and people-watching. The art stuffs being sold were pretty varied, as the wares in these sorts of events usually are, but it was a pleasant day to be out walking. I also got to see Evan, but only briefly as I was on my way out and he on his way in.
I then spent the evening visiting Brendan and Maria. They introduced me to WarioWare, which seems to be a game invented specifically for people with ADD, but man is it fun. (note that site doesn't have any actual game info on it...or maybe it does, it's just hidden in those secret doors). We also dug out my old tape of Captain Power episodes, which was fun and nostalgic, but slightly lacking seeing as we didn't have any of the toys. It was okay, though, we shot the screen with finger guns and made the little shooting noise.
Seeing my friends and being home was incredibly refreshing, and I only hope that doesn't immediately drain out of me upon returning to school. Soooo much work to do, so little time. I guess that's always true, though.

Bit-o-Humor
Every semester, before all students register for classes, they have to get their courselist approved by their faculty advisor (not anymore for me!). Sheldon (painting professor) often sends out emails to remind his advisees to come and do this early and not wait until the last minute, but the closing words of this term's email were just too priceless not to post.
"....Lastly, I will not be available during registration week (April 26 – 30), due to a heavy schedule. Don’t procrastinate. If you do, you’ll not get into your courses, miss out on finishing your degree, disappoint your family, ruin your career, be forced into menial disgusting jobs for low pay, and completely fail to attract a desirable mate. So choose those courses now!
Your companion in virtue and industry,
Sheldon "
Ah, Sheldon, I will miss your awesomeness ^_^

Happy Easter
Whew! That was hard, but here I am again, safe in the folds of LJ. Well, what's been new.
Well, several people had the NERVE to get new journals while I was away ^_^ Anyway, I'll have fun catching up on, , and .
We had our group critiques for the senior art majors in early March, which helped me get on my way with my pieces. I like how they're turning out, but I have to grind and cold work them a lot, which will take up the bulk of my time. This week will actually be the last week in the hot shop for me, as I devote the rest of the time between then and my show grinding and polishing, grinding and polishing, grinding and polishing x_x Here are some previews..

Let's see let's see, anything else? Well, I'm sure I'll think of things later. Hope everyone has been well! Time to catch up on journals.
School has been busy, but over Spring Break I flew up to Connecticut to see Carleton, and much FFX ensued, it was an excellent break.
Now, Easter weekend has been a much of a break in its own right. I met with some high school friends Friday night, where we bonded over video games and went secondhand book shopping the next day.

The First was Blue..
Of course it is the day when I decide to wear my shoes with the least traction that we have a freezing rain disaster. I walked out the door to discover the world had been covered in a very thin sheet of ice while I'd slept.
It was somewhat adventurous--trying to find the best courses to the nearest patches of grass to walk on and such--and when I ran out of grass on my trip to the bank, I resorted to walking on bits of slush between the road and the sidewalk and small streams of running water. I often found myself standing, precariously balanced, the start of the grass merely two steps away, but dangerous icy pavement one step away, pondering the best way of moving to avoid an Alison Furlong accident.
It was treacherous and frightening, but I made it to and from the bank and to the theater without falling and killing myself. The icicles forming on the cars as the drove were very pretty.
EDIT: Okay, that's it, every time I find one of you Centre kids' journals I end up finding 3 more. So I demand that all of the Centre people that I know that have journals that I don't know have journals post a comment, so that I know...umm...yeah. That is all.

2003 Year-end review
Hooray for 2004! Time for the 2003 year-end review...
-2003 rolled in with winter term, rebuilding the furnace, and blissful blissful free time. Sitting quietly and watching D Flo, Brendan, Eric, and others play Gauntlet for 12-18 hours each day was like heaven. Heaven I tell you!
-Spring term was quiet front-loaded, and I remember most of the beginning was spent preparing for SETC, which was a great and fun experience. I'm really glad I went, and hope to go again this year.
-Getting the job at Berkshire was a great relief in the spring, because it meant I had no foreboding worries about the summer. It was also helpful that my scheduling for school worked out perfectly, and that I was able to get my first choice in campus housing for the next year. That spring term really was apologizing for all the hard stuff I'd had to do before, I think.
-The summer and The Berkshire Theatre Festival. I'm so glad i took that internship; I learned so much, had tons of fun, and that's where I met and developed my initial friendship with Carleton.
-Fall came around and school was tough, but I started dating Carleton, which was a big deal for me. Like, it goes down in the "Notable events of Lisa's Life" section.
-New Year's Eve. Hanging out with Brendan and Maria. Playing video games. I always have a rough time at New Year's parties, because I don't drink, and many of my friends who do would rather do that than sit and play video games. This year I decided to have fun, and I feel bad for not seeing Darren or Will, but I will see them again, and I actually had fun this year! Woohoo!
2004 is looking out to be scary and exciting, as graduation and for-really-real life is right on the horizon. I'm ready for it, though, i think. Hope everyone has a great year!

I hate leading zeros
Ultimately, I suppose it's been a good week. Discounting a few things, of course, like the fact that I did not finish my comp sci project that's due tomorrow. When I have to make a decision between pulling an all-nighter to get something done and not getting it done, I opt for sleep, it's more important. No worries here.
Meanwhile, Kay, the hard core grad assistant at the studio who happens to be my glass partner, convinced me that instead of dividing up 4 3-hour slots to half an hour each, we should each take 2 slots and work the whole 3 hours. My first long slot is tomorrow, we'll see how it turns out x_x
This weekend has potential to be very nice or rather dull. A large chunk of my friends, namely Sam, Will, Meghan, and Flora are going to be off to some enviro-theatre conference, while Ken and Evan go to Louisville.
I'm trying my hardest to convince Brendan to have a sketchbook party with me Saturday night, since we'll be the only ones about. Brendan is my hero.
Friday, even he will be gone, so I'll be all by myself. No worries, though, i need some time to myself to get some things done, me-time is always nice to have. So it seems the weekend will balance on the thing line between pleasant, calming rest or boredom, we'll see what happens.
Meanwhile, Ken has joined the fray.

Will Johnston Doesn't Believe in Binomial Nomenclature...
Tonight we had auditions for Shenanigans, the improv troupe of which I belong to here at my college. It was a great bunch of people, very talented, very witty, and a million times better than last year's audition lot. Until this I've never been in a position where I had to take part in the casting process of something, and it's quite tough!
Narrowing it down was a tough call, and we let many people go to "simmah in da pot" for a year, in hopes that they'll try out again next year when all the Shenanigans seniors graduate this year.
They were good. Better than me by far, and sometimes I *still* wonder why I've been kept in the group up to this point. I don't consider myself particularly quick-witted, all of my humor comes in 10 minute blocks at the very least. Granted, I've had my moments, I was particularly proud of my 1 minute speech on Polly Theism, but I just don't know. Perhaps I'm good to play off of? I don't know.
So, our goal is to beef up our performance frequency, and after this year the infamous Will Johnston will turn the project over to D Flo, and then we'll have to find capable hands to leave it in after we graduate...
...after we graduate. Good God, I'm graduating next year.
::runs to the bathroom to hurl::

Mizunch
Why are packaged foods so much less appetizing when they're smashed? I mean, there's really nothing wrong with them, they're still in their sanitary little plastic wrapping, and at most suffer from some mild pre-mastication. But when I pulled the squished oatmeal pie out of the bottom of my backpack I instinctively grimaced with an "Ewww, yuck."
Of course, after some reflection, I went ahead and ate it, and it was still as tasty as it would have been without my calculus book sitting on top of it for most of the day. And yet, I've also been known to eat potato chips that had fallen on the floor of the glass studio, or chase a kiwi down a flight or two of stairs before I caught up with it to eat it.
It could just be me.
Meanwhile, plasma grenades suck.

No more slacker
I finally managed to get my page updated, and I got that caption contest up there as promised! take a look!
Meanwhile, I finally got some comic inspiration...even if it did come from Halo.

As for tonight, a double birthday party is in order, we'll see what happens ¬_¬

Facial Feedback Hypothesis
Since I alone make up the painting III class this term, I'm being bombarded with independent projects left and right. Whereas the painting II kids are doing an extended self portrait, I have chosen to do an extended self portrait smiling.
You see, anyone who's tried a self portrait knows that their default expression is "concentration," and it just so happens that my "concentration" face is also the same as my "demonic possession going to eat your soul" face. This is a hinderance because, in spite of what anyone may tell you, I'm not a demonic soul-eater from day to day.
So I thought, dammit, I'm going to make a portrait of myself smiling for once, maybe I'll have an easier time making it look like me. It seemed just the challenge (painting someone smiling is rather difficult to pull off). Well, after a rough, preliminary painting sketch tonight, I've found that not only am I more recognizable, but smiling the whole time also has beneficial side effects. I'M IN SUCH A GOOD MOOD!!!
Here I was dreading and whining having to go paint tonight, and instead, I'm all cheerful and skipping-round like. This project is going to be the most enjoyable one yet. Hooray for loosely proven psychological hypotheses! Hooray!

Hmmmm...
The other day they cut down a tree on campus, because it was sick or something, and as I was walking by the broken up pieces, I noticed them covered in flies. Like some rotting animal carcass. How pecuuuliar...

I'm going to the store and I'm going to buy...
The Wednesday-Thursday block is an important time for me. I have no classes after lunch on Wednesdays, no blow slots Wednesday nights, and no classes Thursday. Thus, I have a huge block of free time that is perfect for getting homework and projects finished. I had it all scheduled out, down to the hour, from after dinner until dinner tomorrow. First I would paint, then Calculus for an hour or so, then start early on my Comp Sci project due next week, then plan in my glass sketchbook.
I began my schedule by promptly dropping the whole thing and playing Halo all day.
However, the day was not totally unproductive. After a few rousing battles, the Halo Crew (or Krew, as Brendan puts it) made a trip to Walmart (with a brief stop by the pet store to get crickets for Ken's frog). I'd been needing to go anyhow. We bought, among other usual grocery items, a plastic mullet. I'm sure that'll be popping up more than once.
The moral of the story is: I'm a slacker. I'll have to be extra diligent tomorrow to make up for all the crap I didn't get done.
Aforementioned Halo Krew:

WHO'S HALO MASTER NOW?? Well...still Ken, BUT...
Halo Stats:
-I won, I actually won! I can't believe it! I beat Ken and D Flo, blam blam dead boom win!! Wooooooowoo! Of course, they punished me by not letting me have the big screen on top anymore and by ganging up on me as much as possible. Punks.
Morg--I totally empathize about the move/aim synchronization thing. It took me FOREVER to get it down, and I still get confused sometimes!
In today's news, I had to sacrifice a pair of pants. You see, it is physically impossible to step into the painting studio without getting paint on you, and I need a new pair of painting pants. My other painting pants are a pair of jeans which I've had for 6 years, barely held together by weak threads, homemade patches, and the unholy powers of all the dark clerics in the land. So it's time to doom another pair to a life of being consumed by paint day after day.
I had two pairs as candidates, both of which I use in glassblowing, so they're a little rugged, but nothing I can't keep clean. On the one hand, I have the green pants, and I love the green pants. They're my favorite green pants (at one time, I would've followed up with "they're my only green pants," but this is no longer true). On the other hand, I have the black pants, which I also love, but which I also use as tech ninja pants. You can't dash around behind stage like a good tech ninja with luminous splotches of white gesso all over your clothes.
So, after much turmoil, I've decided to condemn the green pants, as I noticed I got a little sliver of gesso on them already. No worries, though, they will still be loved, just not wearable outside the context of the art barn.
Said green pants..

By the way, thanks for the welcomes, all!
Dun dun dun
Well, here I am! Special thanks to Synnabar for hookin me up, and to those who suggested, peer pressured, or used idle threats to convince me to start a journal.
In recent news, I have a nasty burn on my forearm from glassblowing, my partner accidentally bumped the steel jacks I was using, and one of the blades smacked my forearm. Ouch! No worries though. Another day, another battle scar.
I think I'm finally recovering from the Centre Plague, which seems to run rampant at the beginning of each year. I'm in the coughing/sneezing phase, and thanks to Kim providing me with tasty tea and sudafed, and for the Rhodes Hall crew for letting me turn their living quarters into a health spa, I'm on the mend.
Current Halo stats:
-Ken still reigns as undisputed champion
-I beat D Flo once, and I'll never let him forget it
-Brendan still yells at me for looking at his part of the screen, a technique I developed in my Mario Kart days and still think is a perfectly legitimate survival skill in first-person shooters.
-I'm getting better. No, really! I promise!
I think that's a reasonable first post. Stay tuned for more bite-sized pieces of life!
